Sierra Bermeja Fires
The Genal Valley survived the Sierra Bermeja Fires
The Genal Valley is as beautiful as ever!!
Our hills are green, the Genal river meanders through our magnificent valley and all of our Pueblos Blancos (White Towns) and the friendly and happy people are fine.
The Sierra Bermeja fires of September 2021 fortunately didn’t affect “our side” so much.
Fortunately, we had the help of countless firemen, water planes and helicopters, ground troops, technical experts, the military and not to forget: neigbours, friends and family.
Nature itself helped too and sent us two days of soothing rain.
So now we are even stronger and the Genal Valley is more beautiful than ever and waiting for you to come visit our spectacular region full of golden chestnut trees, rolling green hills and the calm and cool Genal River.
Some facts about the fires:
- It has been categorised as a “Sixth Generation” fire
- It created a phenomenon known as a “cumulonimbus flammagenitus cloud”
- Close to 2000 people were evacuated
- Estimates of between 8 000 to 10 000 hectares were affected
- 100 dogs were rescued from a dog shelter
- The fire raged for 6 days

My condolences to the family and friends of the fireman who lost his life while fighting for our Genal Valley.
“In an incredible setting with a beautiful village, quiet and surrounded by nature.”
